Major JCB Fleet Investment Strengthens Partnership Between Scot JCB and Thomas Plant Hire

Thomas Plant Hire has built a reputation as one of the UK’s fastest growing plant and equipment hire businesses, supporting projects across construction, utilities, industrial sectors and beyond. With a fleet now numbering thousands of machines and customers operating nationwide, the company continues to invest heavily in modern, reliable equipment to meet growing demand.

A key part of that strategy has been a major investment in JCB machinery, supplied through Scot JCB.

In 2025 alone, Thomas Plant Hire invested in more than 400 new JCB machines, with a further order of over 300 machines scheduled for delivery in 2026. The investment includes a wide range of equipment, from mini excavators and site dumpers through to tracked excavators and telescopic handlers, helping the business maintain a young, reliable fleet across its nationwide operation.

Supporting a Growing Nationwide Operation

Founded in 2000 in North Wales, Thomas Plant Hire has grown significantly over the past two decades. What began as a business supporting its own contracting and civil engineering operations has evolved into a major national hire company serving customers across the UK.

Today the company operates from 14 depots nationwide and supports projects across sectors including housebuilding, civil engineering, utilities, agriculture, industrial maintenance and even large-scale events.

Grant Rees, Head of Business Development at Thomas Plant Hire, stated the company’s rapid growth has been driven by a combination of strategic acquisitions and a commitment to diversifying its offering. “In recent years we’ve expanded both geographically and in terms of the services we provide,” explained Grant. “We’ve acquired several businesses and developed additional divisions including tool hire, accommodation, powered access and machine control.

“That diversification means we can support customers across multiple sectors, from construction and infrastructure through to film productions, large events and industrial projects.”

Investing in Fleet Quality

With such a broad customer base, maintaining a modern fleet is essential.

Grant explained that investment in new machinery is driven by several factors, including reliability, utilisation and maintaining the company’s professional image on site.

“When customers hire a machine, they expect it to arrive looking fresh, modern and ready to work,” he said. “Keeping the fleet young helps us maintain high utilisation and reliability. Older machines naturally require more repairs and maintenance, so by investing regularly we reduce downtime and ensure our customers receive dependable equipment.”

The company’s fleet now includes thousands of items of plant and equipment across the UK, making Thomas Plant Hire one of the largest operators in the sector.

Building a Strong Partnership

Thomas Plant Hire’s relationship with Scot JCB began following the company’s expansion into Scotland, which included the acquisition of Mulholland Plant. Since then, the partnership has developed rapidly as Thomas Plant Hire has continued to invest in new equipment.

Grant highlighted the importance of working with a supplier that can support a fleet operating across multiple locations. “One of the key factors for us when choosing a manufacturer is the level of after-sales support and the relationship we have with the supplier,” he explained. “In a fast-moving hire environment, response times and support are critical. From what we have seen, Scot JCB has been extremely reactive and supportive.”

That support has been particularly important given the scale of Thomas Plant Hire’s operation, with machines working across Scotland, England and Wales.

“In terms of the relationship with Scot JCB, it’s been seamless,” Grant added. “When we place orders, everything runs to plan, and the after-sales support is key. As the saying goes, the salesperson sells the first machine, but the service sells the second.”

As Thomas Plant Hire continues to expand its national presence, the company expects its investment programme to continue alongside further geographical growth.

With new depots opening in key areas and the business continuing to diversify its services, the partnership with Scot JCB is set to play a significant role in supporting that development.
