JCB Unveils Its Most Powerful Wheeled Loaders Yet: The New 480 and 490 Wheel Loaders

JCB has taken a significant step forward in large machine technology, previewing the brand-new 480 and 490 Wheel Loading Shovels at Hillhead 2026; the UK’s leading quarrying, construction and recycling exhibition. These aren't just updates to existing models, they're an entirely new benchmark for what a large wheeled loader can do.

If you're operating in quarrying, waste handling, ports or heavy construction, read on, because these machines have been built with your productivity in mind.

Achieve Maximum Productivity with the 480 and 490 Wheel Loaders

The JCB 480 and 490 are JCB's largest and most productive wheeled loaders to date, with rated payloads of 8,000kg and 9,000kg respectively. Both models are fully compliant with EU Stage V emissions standards, so you get cutting-edge performance without compromising on environmental responsibility.

What makes the range particularly versatile is the choice of standard or long loader arms on both models. This means your local Scot JCB team can configure the right machine for your exact application, whether you're loading into high-sided trucks on a quarry face or managing bulk materials at a port terminal.

A Patented Loader Arm Design That Changes the Game

At the heart of the 480 and 490 is a genuinely innovative loader arm. JCB has developed a patented design that brings together the best of two worlds: the high breakout force of a traditional Z-bar linkage, combined with the precision and all-round visibility of a tool carrier arm.

The result? Compact bucket link packaging that removes the forward-protruding Z-link, freeing up space for oversized, low-density buckets. Wide-angle, high-torque bucket rotation is maintained at every point in the lift cycle, meaning you get excellent material discharge even when tipping off steep loading ramps giving a critical advantage in quarrying and aggregate handling.

Pin heights range from 4,445mm to 5,000mm at maximum lift, so loading into high-sided trailers, hoppers and crushers is straightforward. Sealed and lubricated pins and bushes, set in heavy-duty castings, are engineered to keep maintenance requirements low and uptime high.

Power and Efficiency Working Together

Both machines are powered by the Cummins X12 diesel engine, producing 250kW (335hp) and up to 1,695Nm of torque which is delivered at just 1,400rpm. That low-end grunt is exactly what you need when pushing into a stockpile or lifting a full bucket clear of the ground.

Power is managed through a standard ZF Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) with adjustable rimpull for optimal traction across varying ground conditions. The clever part is the intelligent hydraulic boost function, which automatically adjusts engine output to meet the changing hydraulic demand from the loader's front end. The engine stays in its most efficient operating zone at all times meaning less fuel burned and more tonnes moved per shift.

The transmission features four virtual gear modes, hill-hold and automatic park brake settings for smooth start/stop operation, plus an integrated transmission brake with automatic engine exhaust braking to reduce wear on the axle brakes.

A new 'single pedal control' system puts travel speed and torque management in one intuitive input giving the operator less to think about, more time focused on the work.

An Operator Environment Built for the Long Shift

JCB has put serious thought into the cab. The Command Driving Position features fully programmable electro-hydraulic (EH) controls mounted directly in the air suspension seat frame, so your controls move with you, not against you. The seat itself offers heating and cooling, electrically adjustable lumbar support and adjustable dampers. On a 10-hour shift, that's not a luxury, it's a productivity feature.

The JCB UX interface runs on a 10-inch full-colour touchscreen, giving operators centralised control over all machine functions, including optional systems such as auto-greasing, object detection and on-board weighing. Smart detents are adjustable to suit individual operator preferences and working styles, improving both efficiency and consistency.

Safety hasn't been overlooked either. Flush-mounted beacons on each corner of the cab roof provide 360-degree visibility warnings to other personnel on site, and the standard object detection system — complete with auto-braking — adds a vital layer of protection against accidental impacts in busy working environments.

The Impact on Your Operation

Whether you're running a quarry, managing a recycling facility or handling bulk materials at a port, the JCB 480 and 490 wheel loaders offer a compelling combination of raw capability and intelligent design. The payload capacities, the fuel-efficient drivetrain, the ergonomic cab and the safety systems all point in the same direction: more productive shifts, lower running costs and a safer site.

These machines are designed to be configured to your needs,  from loader arm choice to optional systems, which means working with a trusted local dealer is the best way to ensure you get the right specification.
