At Scot JCB, developing talent from within is a big part of what we do - and Shane Smith’s career journey is a great example of how starting as a trainee can lead to a long-term, rewarding role. Now a Parts Sales Advisor at our Forfar depot, Shane has been with the business for over 10 years, progressing from an apprentice role into a key position within the parts department.

Starting Out

Shane joined the company in May 2015, straight from school, when the business was previously A M Phillip Agritech Ltd before becoming part of Scot JCB Group.

“I started as an apprentice, and it’s led me to the position I’m in now. I was attracted to the role because I knew it would be a good challenge - working with different types of machines and learning about the parts and how they work.”

With a background helping his grandad on a farm, the industry already felt like a natural fit, and that early interest helped shape his career path.

Learning and Development

Like any trainee role, the early days focused on building a strong foundation of knowledge, supported by experienced colleagues and training.

“When I first joined, I had a lot of help from my team. They were brilliant at showing me the systems and how the day-to-day jobs worked.”

Alongside hands-on experience, Shane completed training courses to better understand different types of machinery and parts systems, allowing him to grow in confidence over time.

Progressing in the Role

Shane’s role has developed significantly since his early days in the business. Starting with the basics of stock control and parts systems, he gradually took on more responsibility as his skills improved.

“As I progressed, I became more involved in assisting customers directly, identifying and supplying the correct parts, processing orders, and supporting the workshop.”

This progression has allowed him to build strong product knowledge, as well as develop key communication and problem-solving skills that are essential in the role.

Day-to-Day Responsibilities

In his current position as a Parts Sales Advisor, Shane plays an important role in supporting both customers and the service department.

“My day-to-day role involves assisting customers and our service department both in person and over the phone, helping identify and locate the correct parts for their equipment.”

He also supports the wider team with managing inventory, including receiving, stocking, and organising parts to ensure everything runs efficiently.

Skills for Success

Over the years, Shane has identified the key skills that make a difference in the role. These include strong product and machinery knowledge, clear communication, organisation, and the ability to work under pressure during busy periods.

A supportive team has been a big part of Shane’s experience at Scot JCB.

“The team I work with are great - we all help each other out when needed, and there’s always a good atmosphere. It makes a big difference day to day.”

Advice for Future Trainees

For anyone considering a similar career path, Shane’s advice is simple: be open to learning and make the most of the support around you.

“Be willing to learn and ask plenty of questions. Take time to understand the machines and parts systems, stay organised, and learn from the experienced people around you.”
