Introducing the JCB 3CX Hydrogen Backhoe Loader: Zero-Emission Power for the Modern Site
JCB has set a new milestone for the construction industry with the formal launch of the 3CX Hydrogen - the world’s first production backhoe loader powered by a hydrogen combustion engine.
Built on the same proven 3CX platform that has set the global standard for backhoe loaders for decades, the machine delivers the same power and torque as its diesel sibling, with zero carbon emissions at the point of use.
“Our operator said that it feels the same as the diesel backhoe. He really couldn’t tell the difference.”
What is the JCB 3CX Hydrogen Backhoe Loader?
The 3CX Hydrogen is a zero-emission backhoe loader powered by a 55kW version of JCB’s purpose-built hydrogen combustion engine. Three composite-wrapped hydrogen tanks mounted on the cab roof hold enough fuel at 350bar pressure for a full day’s work.
Other than the tanks themselves and the fuel distribution lines, the machine looks, feels and works like any other 3CX, which is exactly the point. JCB Chairman Lord Bamford has driven the project from the start, with the company investing more than £100 million in hydrogen engine technology and building over 150 engines through the development program.
Power Without Compromise: Key Features of the 3CX Hydrogen
The 3CX Hydrogen is powered by a 55kW version of JCB’s purpose-built hydrogen combustion engine.
• Matched Performance: Delivers 440Nm of torque at 1,150rpm, mirroring the diesel 3CX on power and feel.
• Clean Technology: Runs on 100% renewable, zero-carbon hydrogen fuel.
• Familiar Engineering: Unlike complex battery-electric systems, this engine is built using existing diesel technology, requiring no "exotic" supply chains or rare earth materials.
• Proven Capabilities: The technology is well proven across construction and agriculture, and service intervals mirror those of the diesel 3CX.
Refuelling Made Simple: Minutes, Not Hours
One of the biggest barriers to zero-emission machinery is charging time. The 3CX Hydrogen solves this through rapid refuelling.
All-Day Operation: Three roof-mounted composite tanks hold enough fuel for a full shift.
Mobile Support: JCB’s purpose-built mobile refueller allows you to top up on-site in minutes rather than waiting hours for a battery to charge.
Turnkey Supply: Through partners like Ryze Power, contractors have a direct route to clean fuel without needing to rebuild their depots.
Familiar Operation, Familiar Maintenance
Step into the cab and you’ll find the layout every 3CX operator already knows: the same air-suspension seat, the same joystick controls, the same 7” colour display with audio, telephony and service alerts. Roof- and quick-hitch-mounted cameras, eight LED working lights and a smooth ride system come as standard.
Service points, fluid capacities and intervals mirror the diesel model, so existing fleets and workshops can absorb the new machine with minimal change.
Ideal Applications for the 3CX Hydrogen
- Urban and low-emission zone projects: where air quality rules tighten by the year.
- Sustainability-led main contractors and infrastructure projects with Scope 1 carbon targets.
- Loading and material handling on trucks, with the integrated quick-hitch forks.
- Groundworks, grading and trenching, with full backhoe and loader hydraulic performance.
- Indoor and enclosed worksites where diesel exhaust would otherwise be a problem.

Backed by JCB Finance
To take the friction out of adopting a new fuel, JCB is working with JCB Finance in the UK to offer a three-year operating lease on the 3CX Hydrogen. Internationally, commercial agreements will include machine insurance and a full-service contract, so customers can deploy the machine with the same peace of mind they get from their diesel fleet.
Ready to Move to Zero-Emission Power?
The JCB 3CX Hydrogen is the first production backhoe loader fuelled by hydrogen, and it’s ready for sites with serious sustainability targets to meet. The same work rate, the same operator experience and the same service routine you already trust, now with zero CO2 at the point of use.
