Irvine Plant Ltd Invests in 80th Anniversary JCB 4CX Pro

Irvine Plant Ltd has recently added the 80th Anniversary JCB 4CX Pro to their growing fleet, reinforcing their commitment to versatility, efficiency, and dependable backup. For owner Ewan Irvine, the investment reflects not just a new machine, but a practical step forward in how the business approaches modern contracting.

From Farming Roots to a Diversified Business

Ewan grew up on his family farm and worked alongside his dad, Graham, for 25 years. As time went on, and with both Ewan and his brother raising families of their own, Ewan began looking to expand into something that offered greater long-term opportunities.

Now in its ninth year operating independently, Irvine Plant Ltd has grown into a well-rounded operation with a diverse fleet and service offering. From excavators ranging from 1.5 to 22 tonnes, to dumpers, loaders, and a gully tanker, the company is equipped to handle everything from groundworks and surfacing to drainage and council work.

Moving Towards a More Efficient Setup

The decision to bring in the JCB 4CX Pro came after reviewing how machines were being used across the business. Previously running multiple machines for similar roles, Ewan saw an opportunity to streamline.

“I sold both our wheeled excavator and loader and went for the JCB 4CX with DUALDRIVE – it made more sense for what we needed.” With additional capabilities like a larger bucket for loading and crushing work, the machine fits well with the company’s involvement in farm-based crushing projects and general material handling.

Key Features in the JCB 4CX Pro That Made the Difference

Several features made the Anniversary 4CX Pro stand out to Ewan, particularly its ability adapt quickly across a wide range of tasks. “The DUALDRIVE was a big thing for us – it just gives you that extra flexibility.”

The quick-release front bucket was another key benefit, especially when it comes to seasonal work. With a reconditioned self-propelled snow blower ready to go, the ability to swap attachments quickly is essential for winter maintenance contracts. Ewan added, “We can just drop the bucket off, pick up the snow blower up and we’re away!”

Beyond winter work, the JCB 4CX Pro is being set up to handle a variety of additional tasks. With plans to utilise attachments such as a road planner and potentially a front-mounted brush, the machine will support patching and resurfacing work, adding further value across day-to-day operations.

Alongside performance, the limited-edition black finish also played a part in Ewan’s buying decision. Matching well with Irvine Plant’s grey branding, the machine offers a distinctive look that stands out on site while reflecting the business’ attention to presentation.

Overall, the combination of DUALDRIVE, quick attachment changes, and multi-role capability sold the machine to Ewan. “We can use this machine for a lot of different things – that’s what makes it work for us.”

Dealer Support and Service from Scot JCB

While the machine itself was a key factor, the level of support behind it ultimately played a major role in the decision to buy from Scot JCB. Ewan’s experience with Sales Engineer Scott Logan stood out early on – initially through helping one of his own customers source a new mini digger. Ewan added, “Scott was so good with the mini digger, he’s been so attentive, everything’s just so easy with him.”

Having a consistent point of contact was especially important to Ewan. Rather than dealing with changing sales reps, he valued working with someone experienced and dependable. “Through the whole sale and everything, Scott was fantastic – that’s one of the reasons we went with JCB. It’s not just about the machine, it’s the backup.”

Practical support on the ground also adds to that confidence. With Scot JCB depots Edinburgh, Kelso, and Glasgow, Irvine Plant is always within reasonable distance of backup when needed. Ewan added, “We’re never really any more than 40-45 minutes from a Scot JCB depot – that’s ideal for us. Everybody involved from Scott through to the engineers, they’re nothing but good!”

Ewan highlighted that Scot JCB Edinburgh’s Service Supervisor Kevin McGuigan provides exceptional support when needed. “He [Kevin] gave me his number and said if you’ve ever got a problem, just phone – sometimes it’s something you can sort yourself to get back up and running.” This kind of direct support can save both time and money for plant hire businesses when small issues can be resolved quickly without the need for a call-out. Ewan agreed, “it’s good for the customer, they [Scot JCB] are saving you money where they can.”

Lower Running Costs

Running costs are another area where Scot JCB stood out to Ewan, with parts seen as more completely priced than some competitors. “Things like filters and grease are pretty reasonable – some manufactures are an absolute fortune!”

Ultimately, that level of service, communication, and reliability made the decision straightforward, giving Ewan confidence not just in the machine, but in Scot JCB.

Looking Ahead

Although the 4CX Pro is still new to Irvine Plant’s feet and having also recently been featured on Scot JCB’s stand at ScotPlant 2026, initial impressions have been strong. Delivered as a 2026 plate, the machine represents a modern addition that stands out both visually and practically. Ewan added, “It looks even better in person than it does in the photos.”

With plans to put the machine to work across a wide range of jobs – and feature in further industry coverage – the JCB 4CX Pro is set to become a central part of Irvine Plant’s operations.

Ewan couldn’t emphasis enough how much he would recommend Scot JCB and specifically Scott Logan. “Like the deal Scott did with my customer, I thought “I should be buying these myself”. I recommend the service, they [Scot JCB] are very attentive.””
