Meet the New JCB Single Drum Soil Compactor Range

Soil Compactor News Banner

JCB has officially expanded its single drum soil compactor range with four powerful new models: the VM58D, VM78D, VM128D, and VM138D. Joining the proven 12-tonne VM118D, this new Stage V-compliant family gives contractors five clear steps up the single drum soil compactor ladder, spanning from 5 to 13 tonnes.

Sharing a modular platform with Europe’s first 12-tonne, Stage V single drum compactor, these new models also boast the latest cab and operator station, as well as JCB’s Connected Compaction telematics.

The VM58D, VM78D, and VM118D models all deliver 55kW of compaction power with no DEF or AdBlue required - slashing after-treatment complexity and reducing daily fluid management costs on site.

What is a Single Drum Soil Compactor?

A single drum soil compactor is a self-propelled roller designed to compact loose soil, sub-base and granular fill on roadworks, civil engineering and earthworks sites. The single vibrating drum at the front does the compaction, while the rear is carried on tyres for traction and steering.
By driving energy down into the layer below, the drum forces particles to settle tightly together, hitting target density in fewer passes than a static roller. Soil compactors come in two drum styles: smooth for general fill and asphalt sub-grade, and padfoot for cohesive clay and silty soils.

The New JCB Soil Compactor Range

All four new machines share JCB’s modular construction, with a high degree of component commonality across the range - simpler servicing, simpler parts inventories, and a consistent operator experience whichever model you climb into.

The new modular range from JCB is optimised for:

  • Road & Infrastructure Construction: Quickly prepping smooth sub-base and granular fill layers for highways and railways.
  • Building Foundations: Achieving tight, high-density compaction for industrial floors and housing developments.
  • Embankments & Bulk Fills: Utilising heavy-duty traction models to confidently roll steep slopes, landfills, and quarry restorations.

JCB VM58D

The 5.4-tonne VM58D is the most compact option in the range, sized for confined sites and trench backfill. Powered by a 55kW JCB by Rehlko Stage V engine with no DEF or AdBlue required, it climbs gradients of up to 60% on direct independent hydraulic wheel drives.

Key spec:

  • Centrifugal Force: 81kN at 31Hz with a 1.7mm amplitude.
  • Drum: 2,700kg front drum with a 22mm shell and 10mm reinforcing ring.
  • Cab Options: ROPS/FOPS canopy or fully air-conditioned cab.

JCB VM78D

Stepping up to 7.1 tonnes, the VM78D adds dual frequency and amplitude for greater versatility across layer types. Like the VM58D, it runs the 55kW JCB by Rehlko Stage V engine with no DEF or AdBlue, and a five-year JCB LiveLink subscription is included as standard.

Key spec:

Centrifugal Force: 138kN or 84kN, selectable on the move.
Frequencies and Amplitudes: Twin 29/36Hz frequencies and 1.8/0.8mm amplitudes.
Drum: 4,050kg front drum with a 25mm shell and 10mm reinforcing ring.

JCB VM128D

At 12.1 tonnes, the VM128D is the higher-output mid-range model. Powered by JCB’s proven 448 Stage V diesel delivering 97kW, it uses a four-mode traction system with work, travel, gradient and padfoot (PD) shell settings. A five-year JCB LiveLink subscription is included.

Key spec:

Centrifugal Force: 256kN on a 6,750kg front axle load.

Frequencies and Amplitudes: Twin 32/36Hz frequencies and 1.8/0.8mm amplitudes.

Drum: 28mm shell with a 10mm reinforcing ring.

JCB VM138D

The flagship of the new line-up, the 13.2-tonne VM138D delivers the highest centrifugal force in the range for serious densification on heavy fill. It shares the 97kW JCB 448 Stage V engine, four-mode traction system and five-year LiveLink subscription with the VM128D.

Key spec:

Centrifugal Force: 292kN on a 7,800kg front axle load.

Frequencies and Amplitudes: Twin 32/36Hz frequencies and 1.8/0.8mm amplitudes.

Drum: 32mm shell with a 10mm reinforcing ring.

Connected Compaction with INTELLICOMPACTION and JCB LiveLink

Every machine in the new range is available with JCB’s INTELLICOMPACTION measurement system, giving operators live compaction readings on the move so they can stop passing when the layer is done which protects against both under and over-compaction.

Connected Compaction is delivered through JCB LiveLink telematics, providing fleet managers with remote visibility of location, running hours, fuel use, fault codes, and service alerts. A five-year LiveLink subscription is included with the VM78D, VM118D, VM128D and VM138D.

A Cab Designed for Long Shifts

The 12–15 tonne machines benefit from a redesigned ROPS/FOPS cab, while all five models share a new operator station. The cab package includes:

  • Easy Maintenance: Flat glass all around keeps replacement costs down.
  • JCB UX Display: A 7” touchscreen - the same display fitted to the X-Series excavator range — feeds real-time data on every machine function, with a rotary controller for glove-friendly menu navigation.
  • Visibility and Safety: LED front and rear working lights and four amber beacons integrated into the roof corners.
  • Comfort: Integrated air conditioning and heating unit.
  • Optional Safety Pack: Road lighting kit, white noise reversing alarm, and immobiliser.

Ideal Applications

  • Road and Infrastructure: Sub-base compaction and granular fill.
  • Civil Engineering and Earthworks: Large fills, embankment building and bulk earthworks.
  • Site Preparation and Housing: Working alongside other plant on developments.
  • Confined and Trench Work: The VM58D and VM78D move into spaces the bigger models can’t reach.
  • Landfill, Restoration and Quarry Projects: Especially with the padfoot drum option (coming later) on cohesive material.
