The Complete Guide to Compact Track Loaders

Compact track loaders are one of the most versatile machines on a modern construction site. Built for heavy lifting, material handling and groundworks in tight spaces, they deliver real productivity in a small footprint.

What is a Compact Track Loader?

A compact track loader is a small, highly manoeuvrable loading machine that runs on rubber tracks rather than wheels. Tracks spread the weight over a larger area, reducing ground pressure and keeping the machine productive on soft, wet or sensitive surfaces. Skid steer loaders share the same chassis, cab and hydraulics but run on tyres, which suits hard standing and paved sites.

Key Features of the JCB Compact Track Loader Range

Powerboom single-arm: JCB’s Powerboom contains 20% more steel than a twin-arm design and gives 60% better visibility

Side-door entry: Operators enter through a wide side door rather than climbing over the attachment, a clear safety benefit when working with forks, grapples or rock buckets.

Large cab: The large-platform cab on the JCB 270T is 33% bigger than competing machines. Air conditioning, a touchscreen display and a reverse camera are standard.

Hydraulic performance: Standard auxiliary flow 90 l/min on the 270T. Optional high flow lifts this to 100 and 126.5 l/min.

LiveLink telematics: Every machine ships with JCB LiveLink for remote monitoring of fuel use, service intervals, location and machine health.

Compact Track Loaders vs. Skid Steer Loaders: Which is Right for You?

The undercarriage is the only real difference. The 270T runs on 400mm rubber tracks; a skid steer runs on tyres. The cab, Powerboom, hydraulics and attachment carrier are otherwise the same.

  • Choose tracks for soft, wet or sensitive ground. The 270T spreads weight over a larger surface area, cuts.
  • Choose tyres for hard standing, paved yards and roadwork. Wheeled machines are faster on hard surfaces and cheaper to run.

If your work mixes both, the 270T’s flotation and grip make it the safer all-round choice.

Tackling Challenging Sites: Optimal Performance Across Weather Conditions

The 270T is built for sites where weather and ground conditions threaten productivity. 400mm standard tracks (450mm optional) keep the machine moving in mud, snow and soft ground where wheeled loaders bog down. The sealed cab is heated and air-conditioned as standard, with a heated air-suspension seat option for cold-morning starts. Creep speed and progressive controls make slippery or uneven surfaces easier to work safely.

Seasonal maintenance: check track tension, hydraulic hoses and battery health before winter, and use the right cold-weather grade of fuel and oil. LiveLink flags service intervals so nothing slips through.

Compatible Attachments for Your JCB Compact Track Loader

The 270T accepts the full JCB attachment catalogue through a mechanical quick hitch:

  • Buckets and forks for general loading, pallet handling and material movement.
  • Grapples for vegetation, rubble and demolition tidy-up.
  • Sweepers and snow blades for site upkeep and winter work.
  • Augers for fence posts and pole installations.
  • Trenchers for drainage and cabling.
  • Breakers, cold planers and mulchers for concrete removal, resurfacing and forestry.

Standard 90 l/min flow runs most tools; the optional 126.5 l/min high-flow circuit opens up the most demanding ones.

Remote Monitoring & Fleet Management with JCB LiveLink

JCB LiveLink is fitted as standard on the 270T, giving live remote visibility of every machine through web and mobile apps.

What operators and fleet managers see: location, running hours, idle time, fuel use, DEF levels, service alerts, fault codes and geofence or curfew warnings.

Less downtime: fault codes flag issues before they stop the machine, so engineers arrive with the right parts.

Lower running costs: predictive maintenance means servicing when it’s needed, not by guess, cutting unplanned repair bills and protecting residual value.

Ideal Applications for Compact Track Loaders

Site preparation: Fitted with a bucket, grapple or forestry head, the 270T strips vegetation, lifts topsoil and moves spoil without churning the ground.

Groundworks: A clear view of the bucket and quick hitch helps when digging footings, backfilling trenches and placing aggregate. Creep speed is standard for precise control.

Material handling: Vertical lift on the 270T is built for stacking and moving palletised bricks, blocks and bagged materials.

Landscaping and demolition: Low ground pressure tracks suit the 270T to finished surfaces, while grapples, sweepers and breakers make the range useful for demolition tidy-up.
