Growing Success: How W Lean Powers Its Business with JCB
W Lean is a family-run business delivering a range of contracting and material handling services alongside it’s established grain storage and drying operation. Working across clearance, handling, and seasonal projects, W Lean relies on a versatile fleet of JCB machinery, including two Loadalls, a 150X HD, a Hydradig, a mini digger, and two generators, to keep operations running efficiently year-round. Reliable equipment and strong dealer support play a key role in maintaining productivity across its diverse workload.
From Family Farm to Diversified Operation
W Lean’s journey began on a family dairy farm, where the business first developed through agricultural contracting before evolving into a much larger and more diverse operation.
After leaving college, owner Willie joined the family business, which later expanded into broiler chicken production, rearing over 1.5 million birds annually. When that contract came to an end, the team needed to rethink how existing facilities could be used – a turning point that shaped the company’s future.
“We were asked to store 3,000 tonnes of barley, and by the end of the first year we had stored 13,000 tonnes”, Willie added.
The rapid growth led to drying and storage contracts with major malt suppliers, prompting significant investment in new infrastructure.
Today, after investing £2.5 million in drying equipment and additional buildings, W Lean now dries around 35,000 tonnes annually, while continuing to operate contracting and site work alongside farming activities.
A Business That Changes with the Seasons
Operations vary significantly throughout the year, requiring careful planning and dependable machinery to meet tight deadlines.
Between August and October, the business enters its busiest period, managing intake, drying, storage, and distribution simultaneously across multiple sites. “Some days we can be handling over 2,000 tonnes per day”, Willie explained.
Outside peak season, the focus shifts back to contracting projects ranging from drainage work to site clearance, with ongoing loading operations continuing throughout winter, demand dependant.
Balancing large-scale handling with contracting commitments requires efficiency, organisation, and machinery capable of adapting to different roles.
Machinery at the Heart of Daily Operations
From JCB telehandlers and excavators to specialist attachments and generators, W Lean’s fleet supports a wide range of tasks beyond traditional material handling. Willie emphasised that “virtually every working day we reply on the various JCB machines in our fleet to assist us in our daily workload.”
W Lean’s telehandlers are particularly versatile, handling everything from loading materials to moving aggregates and supporting customer projects.
Willie told us, “Our two telehandlers not only load grain but they handle everything we throw at them – digging gravel, loading fertiliser, lime, and anything our customer require to be shifted.”
Specialist applications also play a part, including a JCB 542-100 fitted with a GreenTec Quad Saw for roadside and field maintenance, while two JCB generators power the drying and cooling systems that underpin the business’ processing operation.
A Standout Addition to the Fleet
Among the latest additions, the JCB 150X HD excavator has quickly proven its value on site. Willie explained, “It’s a huge improvement on its predecessor – better stability, greater digging power, and a cab operators can sit in the 12-hour shifts.”
The machine’s performance has already made an impact, clocking over 650 hours within the first four months of operation – a clear reflection of how heavily it is relied upon.
A 35-Year Partnership with Scot JCB
W Lean’s relationship spans more than three decades, built on reliability and consistent support.
Willie stated, “The JCB telehandler was what made us go to Scot JCB, and the next-day parts availability. They [Scot JCB] know the importance of getting machines up and running if a breakdown does occur, and the fact they answer calls out of normal hours makes a huge different when deciding on new machine purchases.”
Investing for Future Growth
Looking ahead, W Lean continues to expand its capabilities. Planning permission has recently been secured for a new drying facility and a 50,000-tonne grain store, significantly increasing overall capacity. This upgrade will take W Lean’s tonnage up to around 90,000 tonnes!
Alongside infrastructure investment, machinery upgrades remain a key part of improving efficiency. Willie explained, “we have ordered a new JCB 457 loading shovel with a 10.5 cubic meter bucket which will allows us to fill lorries with 4 buckets of grain instead of the 7 buckets out current shovel takes.”
Trusted Support from Start to Finish
After decades of working together, W Lean credits Scot JCB’s service and flexibility as major factors in its continued loyalty. When we asked Willie what he would say to another business considering JCB machinery he said, “Go for it – they [Scot JCB] provide an excellent service from sales, service, and warranty work. They’re happy to provide demonstrations prior to purchase and change the specs to suit our requirements.”
For W Lean, success depends on efficiency, adaptability, and reliable machinery able of performing across a wide range of demanding applications. Supported by Scot JCB’s long- standing expertise and service support, the business continues to invest confidently in equipment that helps keep operations moving.
