Hands-On Learning in Action: Meet Apprentice Charlie Draper
Second-year apprentice Charlie Draper discovered his passion for engineering while exploring college courses. After initially starting a college course that didn’t feel like the right fit, Charlie began searching for a hands-on apprenticeship and came across Scot JCB’s programme. He explained, “the opportunity aligned perfectly with my plans to move closer to the Carnforth depot, making it an ideal step forward. I’ve always been interested in machinery and engineering, and this apprenticeship has given me the chance to pursue a career in an industry I’m excited about!
A Day in the Life at Scot JCB Carnforth
Charlie starts his day early at the depot, often arriving ahead of schedule to get set up. His work covers a variety of tasks, keeping each day engaging and different. These include:
- Conducting pre-delivery inspections (PDIs) on new machinery.
- Preparing used machines for resale.
- Supporting engineers on-site and in the workshop.
- Assisting with larger, more complex projects.
Charlie adds, “a rotation between workshop and field work allows me to develop both practical skills and a broader understanding of the business, giving me valuable hands-on experience from day one.”
Developing Skills and Knowledge
Joining the apprenticeship with little prior mechanical experience, Charlie has made exceptional progress in both practical and theoretical knowledge. “The role has helped me understand how machinery works and given me confidence to work on JCB equipment for the first time.”
Charlie’s time at college complements his on-the-job learning, providing theoretical knowledge that he applies directly during practical tasks. Additionally, training sessions at the JCB Factory and at Scot JCB Headquarters in Glasgow, have further enriched his understanding of the machinery and industry standards.
Guidance and Support Throughout the Journey
Charlie explained “I have felt very supported throughout my apprenticeship so far. Service Supervisors and colleagues at Scot JCB Carnforth are approachable and encouraging, always willing to answer questions and provide guidance.” College tutors also offer a structured learning environment that reinforces his practical experience.
This combination of mentorship, structured teaching, and hands-on training has allowed Charlie to develop his confidence and skill set in a supportive environment.
Memorable Milestones
One of Charlie’s proudest achievements was assisting with an engine rebuild – stripping it down, diagnosing issues, and reassembling it to working order. This task allowed him to directly apply his college learning in a practical setting and gain a real sense of accomplishment.
A Positive and Encouraging Work Culture
Charlie highlights the friendly and collaborative environment at our Carnforth depot. “Colleagues are approachable and happy to offer advice, which creates a welcoming atmosphere and a positive work culture.”
Advice for Aspiring Apprentices
Charlie encourages anyone considering a Scot JCB apprenticeship to just go for it! “Even if you haven’t worked on machinery before, being open about your background will not be a barrier – Scot JCB provides all the training and support needed to succeed.”
