Shaping a Hands-on Career: First-Year Apprentice Josh Wade Shares His Journey

Josh News Banner

Starting his career journey in the heart of Northumberland, first-year apprentice Josh Wade is based at our Alnwick depot, where he quickly became a valued member of the team.

Discovering his Right Path

“After completing my A-level qualifications in school, I realised I wasn’t keen on uni, I wanted something hands-on.” Having previously worked as a greenkeeper on a local golf course, Josh enjoyed being around machinery and knew he wanted to do a job that involved working with them, not just operating them.

While travelling abroad, Josh came across the Scot JCB apprenticeship programme and applied immediately! With Scot JCB’s strong reputation in the industry, he saw it as an excellent opportunity to begin a long-term career.

A Typical Workday for a First-Year Apprentice

Josh’s day starts at the depot, where the team reviews upcoming jobs for the day ahead. His workload varies significantly – from mechanical repairs and component replacements to pipework and hydraulic tasks.

Josh works among all the engineers at the depot, giving him exposure to a wide range of skills, techniques, and working styles. Josh said, “My favourite days are spent out on customer sites or construction projects, as they bring variety and a new challenge.”

Growing Skills and Confidence

Communication has been one of Josh’s biggest areas of development. “Coming from a previous job where teamwork was limited, to now speaking regularly with colleagues to plan and complete tasks every day, it’s key, especially when working on a job.”

His confidence has increased substantially since starting, helped by the hands-on nature of the role and the constant learning opportunities that come with each new job he works on.

Support From Workshop to Classroom

Josh explained that he feels completely supported within his apprenticeship, both on the job and through his college block training, “Whether it’s lecturers helping with theory or engineers in the workshop offering practical explanations, support is always available to help, you’re always learning.”

Additional in-house training is provided at Scot JCB Headquarters in Glasgow by our designated trainer John Littleton to provide further guidance for apprentices alongside their college work.

A Standout Achievement

One of Josh’s proudest moments to date involved replacing both the boom and dipper on a mini excavator. This was a detailed and technical task as Josh had to carefully reconnect all the hydraulic hoses correctly! Successfully doing so this early in his apprenticeship gave him a strong sense of accomplishment.

Josh also enjoyed visiting the JCB factory, where he saw production processes up close and gained a deeper appreciation of how the machinery he works on every day is built.

A Supportive and Welcoming Team

Josh describes the atmosphere at Scot JCB Alnwick as friendly, collaborative, and enjoyable. Rather than just a workplace, he feels part of a close-knit team where everyone supports each other and shares knowledge freely.

Advice for Future Apprentices

For anyone interested in applying for a Scot JCB apprenticeship, Josh recommends “being ready to dive straight into hands-on work!” He believes the fast-paced, practical side of the apprenticeship is one of the most effective ways to learn and build confidence.
