From Apprentice to Service Manager: Angus Erskine’s Journey at Scot JCB

Angus News Banner

Angus Erskine began his career at Scot JCB over two decades ago as an apprentice, quickly developing the skills and experience that would shape his future in the industry. From the outset, Angus was drawn to an apprenticeship as a practical, hands-on alternative to traditional education. He was motivated by the opportunity to work with JCB machinery, gain real-world experience, and progress in a career where every day presented new challenges.

Building Skills Through Hands-On Experience

From the beginning, Angus benefited from a structured blend of workshop training, college study, and factory-based courses. Initially, he worked alongside experienced engineers, learning foundational techniques and gradually taking on smaller tasks himself.  “The real growth came when I started visiting customers independently. Managing on-site breakdowns required problem-solving, organisation, and confidence - skills that laid the groundwork for my future roles.”

Learning from Mentors and Teamwork

A key part of Angus’s development was the mentorship he received from experienced engineers at Scot JCB. The collaborative environment encouraged questions, fostered teamwork, and instilled a strong work ethic. “I quickly learned the importance of thinking on my feet, communicating with customers, and taking pride in delivering a reliable service - essential elements for any engineer in the field.”

Advancing Through Roles at Scot JCB

Following his apprenticeship, Angus spent several years in field service, travelling across Scotland and gaining experience on a wide variety of projects, from farms to construction sites. He then transitioned into a training role, where he shared his knowledge with new apprentices, further honing his leadership and coaching skills. Today, as Service Manager, Angus oversees operations while continuing to support the next generation of Scot JCB engineers.

The Value of Apprenticeships

Angus believes apprenticeships are crucial to Scot JCB’s success. “They provide the company with skilled engineers who understand the Scot JCB way of working, while providing them with a structured pathway to develop both technical and professional skills. Apprenticeships combine practical learning with real work experience, preparing them not only for engineering roles but also for the demands of the workplace - from time management to customer service.”

Embracing a Dynamic Industry

Over the years, Angus has witnessed remarkable changes in the industry, including the rise of electric and hydrogen-powered machinery. Despite evolving technology, he sees engineering as a long-term career with constant learning opportunities. He emphasises that curiosity, perseverance, and a willingness to ask questions are key traits for anyone entering the field.

Supporting Future Engineers

Scot JCB fosters a welcoming and supportive environment for apprentices. Angus explained, “new starters are encouraged to step out of their comfort zone, gain confidence, and gradually take responsibility for their work. Through a combination of college blocks, in-house training, and mentoring, apprentices receive comprehensive support while developing the practical and professional skills needed to thrive in their roles.”

Guidance for Aspiring Apprentices

For those considering a Scot JCB apprenticeship, Angus advises embracing the challenges and opportunities that come with it. Success requires dedication, enthusiasm, and a genuine interest in engineering, but the rewards - practical expertise, career progression, and personal growth - make it worthwhile. An apprenticeship at Scot JCB offers not just technical training but an introduction to the professional world and lifelong skills.
