Empowering Future Service Engineers: Meet Third-Year Apprentice Charlie Potts
Based at Scot JCB Newcastle, third-year apprentice Charlie Potts, always knew he wanted a career that was hands-on, dynamic, and full of variety. After discovering the Scot JCB apprenticeship programme from a post on our Facebook page, he realised it aligned perfectly with his interests in heavy machinery, problem-solving, and working in a fast-paced environment, where no two days are the same.
Getting Paid from the Start
Charlie said one of the key reasons he decided on an Apprenticeship was that this was being paid while he got his qualifications, “It’s win-win, I wanted to get straight to work but I also wanted to become qualified, a Scot JCB Apprenticeship means you can do both.”
Every Day is Different
One aspect Charlie enjoys most about his role is the sheer variety. His days range from completing PDIs in the workshop to attending site visits.
Now working in his own van, Charlie balances workshop collaboration with the freedom of field service work. Whether supporting the team on larger jobs or troubleshooting issues on his own, “I like the independence and responsibility that come with the role while knowing I still have the support available when required.”
Developing a Wide Range of Skills
Since joining Scot JCB, Charlie has gained a broad mix of technical and academic skills. From mechanical principles and hydraulics to the maths and reading required for diagnostics and paperwork, the Scot JCB apprenticeship programme has pushed him to grow across all areas.
Growing in Confidence and Independence
Charlie reflects on how significantly his confidence has developed since his first year. Working independently on-site has helped him to learn to think on his feet, communicate with customers, and take ownership of his work.
This independence has strengthened his problem-solving skills and reinforced his ability to represent Scot JCB professionally in a customer-facing environment. Charlie added, “I’ve gained knowledge and confidence inspecting and repairing a wide range of JCB machines due to hands-on experience and continuous learning at work and college.”
Guidance and Support That Makes a Difference
Throughout his apprenticeship, Charlie explained he has felt fully supported by his supervisors, trainers and colleagues. Whether he needs help with a technical issue, advice on a new task, or clarification during college work, there is always someone willing to guide him.
Charlie also makes good use of digital resources such as technical manuals and job files, which help him work through unfamiliar tasks and strengthen his understanding.
A Memorable Milestone in Charlie’s Training
A standout moment for Charlie was successfully working through a challenging internal repair. “Although the job initially seemed complex, I managed to identify the problem and fix it,” which gave him a strong sense of achievement and highlighted how far he has come since starting the apprenticeship.
A Supportive and Professional Working Environment
Charlie describes Scot JCB Newcastle as a positive and well-organised place to learn and work; the team atmosphere, support from senior engineers, and access to the tools and resources he needs have all played a key part in his development. Charlie said, “The team at Newcastle are great, everyone is really friendly and supportive, and you can’t ask for more than that!”.
Looking Ahead: Building His Future at Scot JCB
After completing his apprenticeship, Charlie hopes to continue developing his skills as a field service engineer. “I definitely want to stay working as a Service Engineer at Scot JCB, I’m looking forward to being in the field myself and doing the best job I can.”
Experience Beyond the Depot: Training at JCB
As part of the Scot JCB apprenticeship programme, engineers visit the JCB factory and the JCB World Parts Centre – an experience Charlie describes as invaluable. “It’s great to see how the machines are built, the production line was amazing”
Advice for Future Applicants
Charlie encourages anyone considering a Scot JCB apprenticeship to “take the leap!” Regardless of previous experience, he believes the programme offers excellent learning opportunities, strong support, and the chance to build a solid foundation in engineering.
